Varieties of wh-exclamatives: A view from the negative wh-expressives in Japanese

چکیده
Wh-exclamatives are usually considered degree constructions (e.g., Zanuttini & Portner 2003, Castroviejo 2008, Rett 2008). However, Japanese possesses what I call negative wh-expressives, which unrelated to degree. argue that unlike typical wh-exclamatives, wh-expressive sentences express a speaker’s attitude, and their compositional system is similar of an interrogative sentence except for the speech act operator. That is, occurs with operator, takes set propositions Q (i) presupposes there unique proposition p in salient, (ii) conventionally implies unexpected speaker has attitude toward it. In this paper, we also look at cases wh expression embedded complement omo-tteiru ‘think’ nani ‘what’ acts as adjunct, show these can be explained by core component proposed mechanism. This paper shows wh-related exclamatives have both scalar non-scalar types, considers new typology exclamatives.

On the Discourse Effects of wh-Exclamatives
Wh-exclamatives are, arguably, a formally individuated class of clauses that are conventionally associated with a particular use, on a par with declaratives, interrogatives, or imperatives. The characteristics that set them apart formally have been discussed at length by Elliott (1974), Grimshaw (1979), Gutiérrez-Rexach (1996), among many others. In English, the most prominent property of matri...
متن کاملOn Wh-Exclamatives and Noteworthiness
We will aim for two things: (1) extend the empirical focus beyond English whatand howexclamatives, to include exclamatives common in other languages that are based on other wh-words; (2) counter the common assumption that exclamative semantics needs to involve some kind of scalar mechanism. Before we motivate and present our analysis, a word of caution is in order. To simplify matters for this ...
متن کاملThe Force of Negation in Wh Exclamatives and Interrogatives ∗
One could assume that the negative morpheme no in (2) is not semantically negative, but this would be dissatisfying in several respects. First of all, in general we of course would prefer not to postulate an ambiguity, on fear of missing a generalization. Second, the question arises of why it is the negative morpheme which takes on the pleonastic function, if the meaning of this item is not imp...
متن کاملMetalinguistic Quantification: Evidence from Japanese Wh-doublets
Contrary to the widely held presumption that quotations are quantificationally opaque, I argue that quantification into quotational contexts is in fact possible, although only in a very limited way. Specifically, I show that quantification over expressions, or metalinguistic quantification, into quotational contexts is attested in natural language. The main empirical support comes from Japanese...
متن کاملOn the acoustics of wh-exclamatives and wh-interrogatives: Effects of information structure and sex of speaker
In German, wh-questions and verb-second wh-exclamatives are string-identical and can only be distinguished by intonation. This study presents data from a production experiment where speakers produced contextualized questions and exclamatives, showing that the two sentence types differ in many acoustic measures throughout the clause. The results also indicate that the realization of both sentenc...
